During the first week of September, the Opportunity Center is all
a-buzz. Clients are excited about the special music they will
perform at the annual performance of the Opportunity Singers.
Clients and staff make sure they are scheduled to work as volunteers
on the golf course. The Village Screen Print Shop is busily working
on all kinds of projects, from volunteer shirts to special
merchandise for sale at the store. It's time for the annual Cherokee
Strip Golf Classic.
The Cherokee Strip Golf Classic, lovingly referred to by its
volunteers and participants as The Strip, is a volunteer-driven,
charitable golf tournament which began in 1961 with the sole purpose
of raising money to help fund the Opportunity
Center. All proceeds from The Strip are deposited with
Opportunity Center Foundation.
The Strip is an invitational, pro-am golf tournament comprised of
approximately 44 teams, with each team consisting of 1 PGA
Professional and 4 amateurs. The Strip is held at the Ponca City
Country Club, Ponca City, Oklahoma, on the Thursday, Friday, and
Saturday following Labor Day. The entry fee covers 3 days of food
and beverage (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) for both the golfer and
a companion. Participants play 3 days of golf (1 practice round & 2
tournament rounds) and receive entry gifts. Numerous social
activities are available for the companion as well as a ladies’ golf
tournament on Thursday.
There is an abundance of evening
entertainment, including a special performance by the Opportunity
Singers during Friday evening's banquet. There’s even more –
Hole-in-one, closest-to-the-pin, and longest drive prizes, a 2-man
amateur horse race on Thursday afternoon (additional fee), an
over-the-top silent auction, a live auction, an Opportunity Center
Screen Print store open on the premises, and on, and on, and on!
for information on how to become
a participant, donor, sponsor, or volunteer.
